A Highland Fairy Tale: We Admire the Details

Yay, we’ve arrived at the details post!  Which means less talking, more photo sharing.   I’ve saved all the major detail shots from the whole day for this post, enjoy!

royal wedding RSVP edited

You didn’t think there was any way I would miss out on having our royal wedding RSVP (aka the best DECLINE in the history of declines) included in the details photo shoot, right?  Mr. Sword is still part of the United Kingdom whether his Scottish self likes it or not.  🙂

Truth time: That isn’t my wedding band anymore, I traded it in for a new one!

Before we get to the big entrances I wanted to share these reception detail shots as well.

Reception Unedits163

I’m really happy with how the room turned out and I love the purple uplighting we added.  If you’ll remember, I had two separate centerpieces, beer bottles and hurricanes, but unfortunately I only have good shots of the beer bottle tables.  To be honest, I dislike the carpet and the chairs in some of the pics but I don’t regret skipping on chair covers.  So not a priority!  Having a band AND a DJ was such a better use of our money.

For all you fellow hotel/ballroom brides out there who wish you had chosen a more unique wedding space, remember, the energy and love of your wedding will overshadow even the most bland venue.

Did you see our Walker’s shortbread favors?  Everyone loved eating them as a wee snack later in the evening.

Our storybook guestbook was a hit and our guests cracked us up with their awesome comments.

One of my favorite Destroy-it-Yourself’s:

The room was filled with love quotes and engagement photos.

I was so pleased with our AMAZING castle themed escort table complete with tartan flag, a prince and princess, and of course the personalized SWORD escort cards.  My mom and her friends did an amazing job on this!  The detail is insane.  (Note: this started as a plain, wooden dollhouse from Michael’s, and I hope to save it for a future daughter of ours to play with someday!)

Finally, our cake was simple and geometric and totally fit our theme and it was so cool to see my wirthday gift cake topper in use!

We used a large piece of our family tartan to cover a square foam that we rented from the bakery as a cake stand and we put up our parent’s wedding photos on either side of the cake.

Because I’m a nanny, that’s why.

The title of this blog post is an answer to a question.  That question is, WHY, Miss Sword, why have you watched (more than once) “Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses?”

image via Wikipedia

The answer is because I’m a nanny, that’s why.  Littlest C LOVES this movie and I have to admit it’s not that bad!  Truthfully I enjoy kid movies.  And while I’m not that into Barbie in general, if Barbie is going to pretend she is a princess and have 11 sisters, I’m GAME.

So, what if I told you I was going to include the intro music from “Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses” in my wedding processional?  What if I told you Mr. Sword has approved this as well as Mom Sword?  Would you believe it?  Because it’s all true.  I showed them this song a few months ago and was shocked that they both thought it worked for our wedding.  Just goes to show ya, it never hurts to ask!

This song just spoke to me and I’m seriously considering having my sexy kilt-wearing groomsman and my gorgeous long dress-wearing bridesmaids walk into this song.  Isn’t it pretty but also kind of dark and romantic?

I also like it because it will be a nice contrast to the bagpipes that will mark Littlest C’s entrance followed by Dad Sword and myself.

Are you having any unusual wedding processional music?  What do you think of this song?

We’ve hired the youngest bagpiper EVER

It’s time for a vendor update!  If you thought we would be having a bagpiper in our Scottish themed wedding then you are correct!  We are having a piper play at our ceremony and I’m pretty pumped about it.

Meet E.

He’s awesome, willing and able to perform at our wedding ceremony, and is youthful 18 years old.

I have to say, when I was referred to him by another bagpiper I assumed he would be middle-aged and a bit more rotund.  After arriving at his home I was curious to meet this piper who we could hear warming up as we walked into the house.  Imagine my surprise when I see this nice-looking, young gentlemen!  Luckily, Mom Sword was able to start conversation while I took a moment to soak it all in.  Of course we had to ask how long he’d been playing the bagpipes and it turns out he’s been playing since he was 13 years old.  He pipes for the Minnesota Police Pipe Band, and it was their free lessons that first helped E learn this wonderful yet VERY LOUD instrument.  (I think Mom Sword is looking into ear plugs for the Big Day.)

After we chatted for a bit, E played a few songs for us and we tried to figure out where in the ceremony we would place them.  It was decided then that I would walk down the aisle to the bagpipes and the rest of the bridal party will walk down the aisle to something different (guitar, DJ played, or otherwise) to make a nice contrast.  I’m super excited about how dramatic and awesome it’s going to sound!  We will also have E play some music for the prelude part of the ceremony as well as our big recessional walk down the aisle, and we’re toying with the idea of having him do his own sort of processional down the aisle to begin everything.  What to know the icing on the cake?  E already has a kilt he can wear for the wedding so he’ll fit right in!

Excited because we found a bagpiper!

(all photos personal unless otherwise noted)

We met with one bagpiper on our trip and luckily he was a perfect fit!  Anyone else having unique or cultural-specific music at their ceremony?

Following up!

Since I’d made a list of goals and “wish list” goals before leaving for our big planning trip, I’d thought it’d be fun to go through them and see how much I got accomplished.  I have to say that while the trip was overall really good and productive, it was also a bit stressful and a little too fast-paced at times.  If at all possible, I DO NOT recommend cramming in as much stuff as we did, unless of course you have to!!  I’ve also added a list of things that were accomplished that I didn’t even plan for!!  🙂

Mean, lean, list-checking-off machines!

Lean, mean, list-checking-off machines!

Goals for Minnesota Trip #2:

  • choose our photographer- CHECK!
  • choose our videographer- CHECK!
  • complete cake testing- CHECK!
  • solidify signature drink- CHECK!
  • take our Pastor out to dinner and discuss the ceremony- CHECK!
  • select and buy a wedding dress- CHECK!
  • hire a bagpiper- CHECK!
  • eat at one or two of the restaurants we are considering for our OOTG rehearsal dinner-CHECK!
I have to toot my own horn for just a second here because I’m super impressed with Mr. Scottish and myself for somehow accomplishing all the major things we set out to do while in Minnesota.  I will be doing individual updates on everything (complete with photos) so I won’t go into details now, but it’s worth noting that I’m also thrilled that no one canceled on us the entire week.  Let me repeat that, aside from one or two rescheduled appointments, EVERY SINGLE VENDOR was where they said they would be when they said they would be there.  And most people commented on how ahead of the game we were with our appointments.  WIN WIN.
Let’s see how we did with our “wish list” goals!

“Wish List” for Minnesota Trip #2:

  • hire a Ceilidh band- CHECK!
  • choose a gown for my bridesmaids- CHECK!
  • brainstorm venue options with Sister/MOH Big Eyes for her wedding- CHECK!  (well we saw Sister Big Eyes’ venue, but it had already been chosen)
  • get The Glue fitted for his kilt rental- CHECK!
  • clean and consolidate the one closet of my stuff still left at my parent’s house- nope
  • work on centerpieces- CHECK!
  • plan my next wedding planning trip to MN- CHECK!
  • visit with friends and family- CHECK!
  • hit up Sam’s Club- nope, but my Mom went, does that count?
  • order our STD’s (photos pending)- CHECK!

It feels so good to see that most of these items can be checked off the list as well!  I had no idea how much we actually accomplished until I did this (it all felt sort of muddled in my brain after five days of non-stop moving).  Now let’s see what else we got done that I would consider an “extra.”
  • buy Dad a new suit from Kohl’s
  • show Auntie B and BM L Dawg our venue for the first time
  • buy supplies to make cutesy girl-type cards for ???? (can’t reveal that info at this time)
  • take Mom around Bed, Bath, and Beyond to show her what we’ve registered for
  • try on summer dresses for Sister/MOH Big Eyes’ wedding
  • help my Mom buy her dress for Sister/MOH Big Eyes’ wedding
  • buy my bridal corset bra
  • find a headpiece for bridal outfit (a gift from Auntie B, more details on that to come)
(all photos personal)

WOW.  I can’t wait to get started on all the updates!  Does anyone else use wedding check lists?  Are you ahead of the game or are you using a more relaxed timeline?

My “BEFORE” Thoughts

I decided to sit down and write a little bit about my expectations before we leave for our 2nd wedding planning trip to Minnesota.  While it’s crucial to get a lot done in a short amount of time, I don’t want to lose my mind doing it.  I figure if I have some concrete goals to accomplish, and a “wish list” of things that I’d like to accomplish, I won’t be as sad if things don’t go MY WAY.  Plus, compiling lists make me giddy with excitement, similarly to how I feel about ice cream and cleaning the bathroom.  (Yes I’m a freak, but a clean bathroom gets me HIGH.)

Me eating ice cream in Scotland near the Edinburgh Castle. Hard to see the giddy but it’s there.

Also, the photo is crooked on purpose.  It’s Mr. Scottish’s favorite way to take photos.  Umm, yea, cool.  (not)  And unfortunately I have no photos of me giddy while cleaning.  These photos will have to do!

Unpleasant I know.

Back to the task at hand!

Goals for Minnesota Trip #2:

  • hire a bagpiper

“Wish List” for Minnesota Trip #2:

  • hire a Ceilidh band
  • choose a gown for my bridesmaids

PHEW, THAT’s A LOT!!!  🙂  Are you curious to see how we do?  What type of lists do you make in regards to wedding planning?  And also, what makes you “giddy with excitement?”  (Doesn’t have to be wedding related!)
