A Highland Fairy Tale: We Admire the Details

Yay, we’ve arrived at the details post!  Which means less talking, more photo sharing.   I’ve saved all the major detail shots from the whole day for this post, enjoy!

You didn’t think there was any way I would miss out on having our royal wedding RSVP (aka the best DECLINE in the history of declines) included in the details photo shoot, right?  Mr. Sword is still part of the United Kingdom whether his Scottish self likes it or not.  🙂

Truth time: That isn’t my wedding band anymore, I traded it in for a new one!

Before we get to the big entrances I wanted to share these reception detail shots as well.

I’m really happy with how the room turned out and I love the purple uplighting we added.  If you’ll remember, I had two separate centerpieces, beer bottles and hurricanes, but unfortunately I only have good shots of the beer bottle tables.  To be honest, I dislike the carpet and the chairs in some of the pics but I don’t regret skipping on chair covers.  So not a priority!  Having a band AND a DJ was such a better use of our money.

For all you fellow hotel/ballroom brides out there who wish you had chosen a more unique wedding space, remember, the energy and love of your wedding will overshadow even the most bland venue.

Did you see our Walker’s shortbread favors?  Everyone loved eating them as a wee snack later in the evening.

Our storybook guestbook was a hit and our guests cracked us up with their awesome comments.

I was so pleased with our AMAZING castle themed escort table complete with tartan flag, a prince and princess, and of course the personalized SWORD escort cards.  My mom and her friends did an amazing job on this!  The detail is insane.  (Note: this started as a plain, wooden dollhouse from Michael’s, and I hope to save it for a future daughter of ours to play with someday!)

Finally, our cake was simple and geometric and totally fit our theme and it was so cool to see my wirthday gift cake topper in use!

We used a large piece of our family tartan to cover a square foam that we rented from the bakery as a cake stand and we put up our parent’s wedding photos on either side of the cake.

Matching Card and Pen Boxes

Hi hive, I’m here with a short post this Monday about a quick DIY project I did recently!

I actually missed the boat on taking photos of this particular project but it’s so easy it doesn’t even need a tutorial.

One day while browsing JoAnn’s (I’m there on a weekly basis) I found these boxes on sale for half off!  I was drawn to this set because of the quotes on it and because of the black and ivory color scheme.  Sold!

I was looking for two boxes of different sizes because I wanted something to hold possible cards from guests and a spot to keep the writing utensils for our guestbook.  Since they’ll be at the same table I wanted them to match in some way, and I’d also hoped to find something that fit our theme.  Since all of our guests’ tables are named with words, and I’m putting up framed quotes around the reception, I knew these boxes would fit right in.

While I was there I also picked up some black ribbon, small wooden letters, black paint, and a small paint brush.

Here’s the finished product:

I added the ribbon (by way of super glue) to each corner on each side to keep the covers from falling down.  And then I painted the letters black and glued them onto the inside cover of the box.

I realize the tape wrapped around the top of the ribbon to keep it from coming apart is very obvious, but I couldn’t care less at this point.  I did this project all by myself in about an hour and a half, and I was so happy to cross it off the list!  No one will notice the tape anyway.

Did you spruce up any boxes to use in your decor?  How are you housing your cards and/or pens for the guestbooks?

Guestbook Switcharoo

Remember how I said we were going to use wishing stones for our guestbook?  Weeellll, things have changed since that was posted.  And that idea has been replaced with an even better idea!

Before I reveal anymore, Sword guests, you know the drill!

(icon by Weddingbee, edited by Miss Sword)

While signing wishing stones in lieu of a book was a nod to his Celtic heritage and a sweet, whimsical idea, Mr. Sword did not think it was fair to ask everyone to sign a tiny rock.  I didn’t think it was fair that they can charge so much for a tiny rock!  Seriously, rocks are pricey!

So we brainstormed and Mr. Sword came up with a new guestbook concept that totally fits our theme.  The idea is to have our guests sign a storybook made up of funny and cute photos of Mr. Sword and I!  Similar to an engagement photo book, where guests sign their name and write their well wishes, but different because they can also add in funny captions to each photo!

We’ll probably end up putting a sign near the storybook saying something to the effect of “Mr. and Mrs. Sword went on some adventures in Chicago but they can’t seem to remember what happened blah blah blah” (still needs to be edited).  We’ll also explain that we ENCOURAGE guests to write word bubbles, witty captions, and obnoxious comments.  I’m sure we’ll be the brunt of some jokes so it’s lucky we both have pretty thick skin!

I’m so curious to see how it works out and I hope people keep it dirty clean.

Since I’m too excited to keep it all a secret, here are a few sneak peek photos that may or may not end up in the final storybook!

The dress I’m wearing in the pic above is my high school prom dress.  Whaaa?

Don’t be scared if it doesn’t make sense.  I have no idea what’s going on either!

I can’t wait to show you all the finished product!

(all photos personal and taken by friend P)

Did you swap your guestbook idea for something else like we did?  Do you think our guests will get into our storybook captions?
